SASOL & BAT scoop honours at ACCA Sustainability Awards
21 Jun 2005
ACCA South Africa hosted the Sustainability Reporting Awards for 2004 and honoured those South African companies that communicated corporate performance to its stakeholders in a manner that pushed the boundaries in terms of sustainability reporting.
At a ceremony held at the Apartheid Museum outside Crown Mines on May 26th, Tim Modise, broadcast personality and previous Chairman of Proudly South Africa, handed the prestigious award of Best Sustainability Reporting jointly to Sasol and British American Tobacco. Pieter Cox, CEO of Sasol and David Crow, MD of BAT in South Africa, received the Awards for their companies.
The aims of the ACCA Sustainability reporting awards are:
- Encourage better reporting on sustainability performance (economic, environmental and social)
- Reward best practice and provide guidance to other entities that are publishing sustainability, environmental and/or social reports
- Increase accountability for impacts and responsiveness to stakeholders
The aim is to reward transparency rather than evaluate performance.
Hillside Aluminium received a commendation for site-specific reporting.
MTN Group Limited received a commendation for reporting on the African Footprint.
African Bank Investments Limited received a commendation for articulating the challenge of sustainable development for their business.
A record number of 22 companies entered this year and we look forward to an even bigger number next year.
A comprehensive and informative Judges Report is available. This report includes examples of good practice and articulates the underlying reasons which separated the winners from the rest.
If your company is interested in participating next year, please visit the ACCA Global Sustainability section for more information. Please call Julia Mekhoe at the ACCA Office in Rosebank, on 537 1760, should you require a copy of the Judges Report.
